Graduate Opportunities

At Core Five we place great emphasis on our graduates, selecting high calibre individuals and guiding their progression through to becoming Chartered Quantity Surveyors and that proud moment of passing their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and becoming a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

As a student member of the RICS, you will join Year 1 of our Core Foundations training scheme and commence your APC training to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

There are many recently qualified Chartered Quantity Surveyors within the company who are now active APC Supervisors, passing on the benefit of their recent experience of the APC process to our current graduates in order to advance their APC progression. There really is a focus on career progression right from the start at Core Five, with a particular focus on success with the APC. This is demonstrated by the regular graduate forums, CPD sessions arranged in-house and regular reviews to ensure suitable experience is gained, all part of Core Foundations.

Core Foundations

Core Foundations is chaired by Howard Spurgin FRICS who is actively involved with RICS including, amongst other commitments, as an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) Assessor and an Auditor of the APC Final Assessment process. This up to date and hands-on knowledge gives our graduates and trainees first class support in being successful in the APC practical training and experience that leads to RICS membership.

Qualifications

It is expected that all graduates (both cognate and non-cognate) will have achieved, or have been predicted to achieve, a minimum 2.1 award in their undergraduate degree.

Non-cognate graduates are welcome to apply and will typically undertake a further post-graduate degree in Quantity Surveying at a university, usually of their choice, sponsored by the company.

Timescale

Applications for our graduate intake open in the September of the preceding year, to coincide with university milk-rounds and the graduate recruitment calendar. The application deadline is in mid-November. Those who are successful will be invited to attend our graduate assessment day (early December) giving you the chance to visit our offices and meet the Core Five team. Starting dates can be throughout the year, as early as February, or as late as October.

Apprenticeships

We understand that not all future surveyors want to go straight to university full-time and would prefer to ‘earn and learn’ by completing a part-time university degree at the same time as working.

This approach usually takes 4-5 years, maybe less depending upon exemptions from previous courses.  This affords the opportunity to be able to jump modules and equally study in Engineering Quantity Surveying instead of Building Quantity Surveying.

Core Five recognises that distance learning requires a significant of time commitment in addition to the working day and consequently allow 1 day’s study time per week, during term time, within the office.

It is important that any offer is conditional upon the applicants achieving sufficient UCAS points to allow application onto the degree course, coupled with sufficient grades at GCSE in Maths and English.  Interviews are conducted during July with all applications being received in the preceding June.

Degree & Training

- 4-5 year degree course
- Core Five graduate training programme, entry level
- In-house engineering and post-contract quantity surveying training modules (Engineering Surveying only)
- RICS accredited degree
- BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying
- Entry onto the RICS ‘APC’

Requirements

- Minimum target 120 UCAS points
- GCSE in English and Maths, grade B minimum
- Offer conditional on meeting the entry level criteria

Training

- University College of Estates Management (UCEM) at Reading
- Distance Learning course = 1 day per week in the office to study during term time
- Engineering: in-house training modules

Outcome

- Upon completion of the course the candidate is eligible for the RICS APC assessment
- Core Five Graduate Training Programme, advanced level
- Potential chartered surveyor in 5–6 years
- Long term career goals carved out every step of the way
- NO STUDENT LOANS / DEBT!

Freddie
I joined Core Five in January 2015 and currently attend UCEM in Reading on a part-time day release basis. I have gained invaluable experience in my time here, and am very happy with my current situation. I work in the Residential team and have already seen projects from conception through to completion and gained experience in a large number aspects of the process.

— Freddie

Trainee Surveyor

George
I aspire to progress through my APC after recently being enrolled on the Core Foundations Structured Training Programme on which I have already received top quality training and support towards every aspect of the APC and my personal development. I believe that Core Five ticks all the boxes, not just for trainees / graduates but personnel of all levels, and I always praise the firm itself and my colleagues to everyone.

— George

Trainee Surveyor

Structured Training Program

Within Core Five, and in previous employments, Alan Wall has set up and operated a structured training programme for undergraduates for over 15 years.  This system works alongside the degree course at UCEM.  The programme mirrors the RICS’ APC route in addition to providing engineering support through in-house training modules designed to provide an insight to all areas of Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health and Lift Services.  Additionally, post-contract modules are also provided.

The programme includes all areas of pre and post-cost control and provides the ‘budding’ surveyor with the hands-on experience necessary to work in the construction industry.

KPIs are set to ensure the undergraduate obtains the correct level of training benchmarked against a balance and pre-determined set of objectives, thus ensuring continued and complete development at all steps.
